The world blood donor’s day is celebrated on June 14th to honor Karl Landsteiner, father of transfusion medicine who was born on June 14th. This year slogan of world blood donor day 2023 is “Give blood, Give plasma, Share life, Share often”. The theme highlights the importance of giving blood or plasma regularly to create a safe and sustainable supply of blood and blood products that can be always available all over the world so that all patients in need can receive timely lifesaving treatment.
To commemorate the world blood donor day 2023, the Department of Transfusion Medicine & Blood Centre, S.R.M Medical College Hospital and Research Centre – 603203 celebrated by having various events on June 12th, 13th and 14th of this month.
On June 12th we conducted an in-house voluntary blood donation camp where several of our medical students enthusiastically donated blood. There were 71 undergraduate medical students who registered for blood donation and blood was collected from 52 of them including 12 female donors.
On June 13th we honored the blood donor organizers by having an event in the blood Centre. The welcome address was given by Dr. Raj Bharath (Professor & Head), Department of Transfusion Medicine & Blood Centre and the occasion was graced by Dr.A.Sundaram, Dean, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre who distributed memento and certificates to the voluntary blood donor organizers who had helped mobilizing voluntary blood donors by conducting numerous voluntary blood donation camps for the SRM patients. We also conducted a drawing/painting competition among the B.Sc. MLT intern students having the WHO world blood donor day slogan “Give blood, Give plasma, Share life, Share often” as the theme for the competition. The winners of the competition were awarded prizes by our Dean who also congratulated the participants of the competition. This was followed by inauguration of Immucor Neo, which is a fully automated immunohematology equipment introduced first time in our SRM Blood Centre.
The third day on June 14th the posters of the drawing competition were displayed in the SRM hospital front office in view of encouraging staff and students to donate blood regularly to transform the quality of life for the transfusion depended patients and help to build a secure blood supply to the patients.
