The World Breast feeding week is celebrated in the 1st week of August to promote breastfeeding, The Department of Pediatrics headed by Dr. Subash.S along with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Chengalpattu, organized various events every day. The entire week was fun and knowledge filled with participation of students, nurses, teaching and non teaching faculties of SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre .
It all started with the Inaugural Function which was felicitated with Lightening of Kuthuvilakku by our Pro.Vice chancellor Dr.Lt.col A.Ravikumar and our Dean Dr. A. Sundaram, Vice principal Dr.V. Leena, Medical Superintendent Dr. R. Balamurugan.
The welcome address was followed up with a Guest Lecture on “Perinatology revisited – Preparing the mother for breast feeding” by Dr. Rahul Yadav, Senior Consultant in Perinatology and Neonatology from Rainbow Children’s Hospital, guindy, Chennai.
The Next day(2nd August) was full of competitions and the event winners were
1.Miss. Monika, Staff Nurse from obstetrics, in Slogan Competition,
2. Mr. Harivarma rajan, BPT final yr Student, in Poster Competition,
3. Mr. Thiyagarajan, Computer Operator, in Meme Competition.
4. Miss Jayapradha, 2nd yr nursing student in Poetry Competition.
5. Mrs.Suganthi, NMC cell in Short video Competition.
6. Mr. Harivarma rajan, BPT final yr Student, in Rangoli Competition
A Quiz on Breast feeding was Conducted for the Nursing Staff on the same day. The winners were Pragatheeshwaran, and Miss. Hindrakumari, from cardiology ICU and Obstetrics labour ward respectively.
The day was followed by an Excellent Outreach activity by our young and energetic doctors in Melkalvai Village where the village people were educated and motivated regarding breastfeeding.
The Next day on 3rd August a well baby contest was conducted and exclusively breastfed healthy babies were selected(Baby Rudran Krishnan and Baby Rabyathula) from pediatrics Outpatient Department and Prizes were given to them. In order to Facilitate and to resolve the difficulties of the feeding mothers, A Lecture on “Breastfeeding and its challenges among new mothers” from Mrs. Anbupriya, Associate Professor from Physiotherapy department was organized and it was helpful as the mothers had various doubts related to breastfeeding.
On 4th August, Breast Feeding Quiz was conducted for Post Graduate students of both pediatrics and obstetrics department and the winners were Dr.Preethi Suresh and Dr. Preethi JD, Postgraduates from Pediatrics dept.
The same day Nutrition Counselling was organized, Mrs. Lakshmi, Nutritionist, gave a detailed explanation and demonstration about appropriate nutrient requirement and intake of healthy foods among lactating mothers.
A Quiz was conducted for Undergraduate students on the same day, all final year MBBS Students actively took part in the event and the winners were Trisha Kesavan, Pooja B, Oviyaa M.
On 6th August PG symposium regarding Breast feeding was conducted. Post graduate students prepared in detail about all aspects of mother’s milk and breastfeeding.
On 7th August, it was about educating the postnatal mothers on breastfeeding latching and positioning techniques.
A week long Celebration ended well with a Pleasant and wonderful valedictory function where the famous Cine artist Kalaimamani Mrs. Saranya Ponvannan and Kalaimamani Mr. Ponvannan were the guest of honor, The IAP chengalpattu Secretary Dr. Sowjan and Dr. Arvind joined the function. The quarterly newsletter of pediatrics department was released in the function and prizes were distributed to all the winners of the various competitions.
