The inauguration ceremony of HYGIEA 2025, the highly anticipated inter-medical college sports event, was held with great enthusiasm and splendour on the morning of 9th June 2025 at the SRM Dental College Ground. Organised by the student council Agasthiyans, under the esteemed guidance of the faculty of SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, the event marked the beginning of an exciting series of athletic competitions among medical institutions.
More than 20 medical colleges from across the region participated, making this edition of HYGIEA one of the largest and most vibrant yet. The inauguration ceremony began at 9:00 AM and was graced by several esteemed dignitaries from SRMIST and SRM Medical College, who shared insightful and inspiring addresses that highlighted the role of sports in shaping well-rounded medical professionals.
The event was honoured by the presence of:
● Prof. R. Mohana Krishnan, Director of Sports, SRMIST
● Dr. R. Venkatraman, Medical Superintendent, SRMMCHRC
● Dr. J.S. Kumar, Associate Dean – PG Studies, SRMMCHRC
● Dr. V. Sathyanarayanan, Associate Dean – Student Affairs, SRMMCHRC
● Dr. S. Sundarapandian, Associate Dean – Alumni Affairs, SRMMCHRC
Their speeches emphasised the importance of teamwork, discipline, and resilience—values that are as essential on the sports field as they are in the medical profession. They also praised the efforts of the student council and faculty in organising an event that not only promotes physical well-being but also strengthens inter-college camaraderie.
A key highlight of the event was the torch-bearing ceremony, symbolising unity and the true spirit of sportsmanship. The torch was proudly carried by the sports secretaries of SRM Medical College, joined by national-level athletes from the institution. This moment stirred a strong sense of pride among the attendees and set a spirited tone for the days of competition ahead.
The successful execution of the event was credited to the student council Agasthiyans, who meticulously planned every detail under the guidance of Dr. Leela, Associate Dean – UG Studies, and Dr. V. Sathyanarayanan, Associate Dean – Student Affairs
The student council received exceptional mentorship from the chief advisors: Dr. Muthu, Professor of Pathology; Dr. Aamina Hussain, Assistant Professor of Community Medicine; and Dr. Monica, Assistant Professor of Microbiology.
Their continuous support and leadership played a vital role in ensuring that the event ran smoothly and upheld the spirit and standards expected of an inter-medical collegiate event of this scale.
HYGIEA 2025 has officially set the stage for an inspiring celebration of sportsmanship, collaboration, and healthy competition among the future healers of the nation. The coming days promise a vibrant mix of athletics, camaraderie, and memories that will last a lifetime.
