
The Department of General Surgery at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur, successfully organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled “HERNIA UPDATE 2025” on June 19, 2025, at the Hospital Seminar Hall, Ground Floor.
The academic event commenced with the traditional Thamizh Thaai Vaazhthu, setting a respectful and cultural tone for the day. Dr. C. Tharun Ganapathy, Professor and Head of the Department of General Surgery, delivered the Welcome Address, warmly greeting the attendees and dignitaries. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the Kuthuvilakku, symbolising the inauguration of a day dedicated to surgical learning and knowledge sharing.
The Inaugural Address was delivered by Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, MS (PGI), DNB, MNAMS, FIMSA, D.Sc (Hon. Causa), Pro Vice Chancellor (Medical & Health Sciences) and Dean In-Charge (Medical), SRM MCH&RC. He emphasised the vital role of continued academic engagement and multidisciplinary learning in the ever-evolving field of surgery.
The CME featured two distinguished guest speakers from MGM Healthcare, Chennai:
● Dr. Deepak Subramanian, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead, Minimal Access & Hernia Surgery, and National Secretary of the AWR Surgeons Community, delivered a comprehensive one-hour talk on “Evolution of Hernia Surgery and Recent Advances”, highlighting both the historical progression and modern innovations in hernia repair.
● Dr. Anirudh V, Consultant in Minimal Access and Hernia Surgery, presented a focused 30-minute session on “Mesh Infections”, offering valuable insights into one of the most significant challenges in hernia surgery, including clinical complications and management strategies.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Dr. R. Lakshmana, Professor of General Surgery, who expressed gratitude to the guest speakers, dignitaries, organising committee, faculty, and enthusiastic student participants.
The session ended with the rendition of the National Anthem, marking the successful closure of a meaningful academic event.
“HERNIA UPDATE 2025” witnessed active participation from faculty members, postgraduates, and undergraduate students, reflecting the department’s unwavering commitment to advancing surgical knowledge and clinical excellence.
