SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre observed World Down Syndrome Day with a series of awareness-focused initiatives led by the Department of Paediatrics in association with IAP Chengalpattu.
The programme brought together children with Down syndrome, their families, healthcare professionals, and students, creating an inclusive space that emphasized acceptance, dignity, and social inclusion. A signature campaign conducted across the hospital campus saw active participation from faculty, staff, students, and visitors, symbolizing collective support for the cause.
An awareness rally was also organised within the hospital premises, covering key departments including Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBG), Paediatrics, and other clinical units. The rally aimed to sensitise both healthcare professionals and the public to the rights, capabilities, and needs of individuals with Down syndrome.
Delivering the presidential address, Dr. Jayanthi, Dean (Medical), SRMMCHRC, highlighted the institution’s commitment to inclusive care. She noted that the hospital’s responsibility extends beyond clinical treatment to fostering an environment rooted in understanding, empathy, and support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
In his welcome address, Dr. S. Subash, Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics, and President, IAP Chengalpattu, emphasised that with appropriate support systems, children with Down syndrome can lead meaningful and fulfilling lives. He added that such initiatives play a crucial role in strengthening community awareness and shared responsibility.
Dr. R. Venkatraman, Medical Superintendent, underlined the importance of institutional awareness in delivering inclusive healthcare, stating that sensitisation across departments significantly improves both patient care and family support systems.
The event also featured the “Socks Solidarity Movement,” symbolising diversity and acceptance, along with an interactive session involving a parents’ support group and a prize distribution ceremony for participating children.
Aligned with this year’s global theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” the initiative reinforced the importance of empathy, awareness, and collective action in building a more inclusive society for individuals with Down syndrome.
