More Than 1,300 Freshers Begin Their Academic Journey at SRM Medicine & Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) welcomed over 1,300 students during the Freshers’ Induction Ceremony 2026 held at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur. The event marked the beginning of the academic journey for students across the University’s Allied Health Sciences and medical programmes.

The ceremony was graced by Dr. Pandurangan Basumani, Director, Kauvery Institute of Digestive Sciences, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, as the Chief Guest. The event was attended by Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar, SRMIST, Dr. T. Mythili, Additional Registrar (MSL), SRMIST, Prof. R. Jayanthi, Dean (Medical), along with the Deans of the Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences, faculty members, students, and parents.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Pandurangan Basumani emphasised the indispensable role of Allied Health Professionals in modern healthcare, stating that “modern healthcare cannot survive even an hour without allied health professionals.” He highlighted that quality patient care is the result of coordinated teamwork involving doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, public health professionals, medical technologists, and several other allied healthcare experts.

Encouraging students to pursue excellence in their profession, Dr. Basumani urged them to approach every responsibility with dedication and purpose. He reminded them that exceptional healthcare begins with compassion, advising them to stand by patients through every stage of care while balancing clinical expertise with empathy.

Speaking about India’s growing healthcare needs, particularly the rising burden of liver diseases, he stressed the importance of multidisciplinary healthcare teams equipped with advanced knowledge and practical skills. He encouraged students to remain curious, embrace lifelong learning, and actively contribute to research and innovation that will strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.

Welcoming the incoming batch, Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar, SRMIST, highlighted the University’s multidisciplinary academic ecosystem, where students from medicine and allied health sciences learn together to deliver integrated, patient-centred healthcare. He encouraged students to make full use of SRMIST’s academic, research, and clinical learning opportunities to build successful healthcare careers.

Addressing the students, Dr. T. Mythili, Additional Registrar (MSL), SRMIST, encouraged them to uphold the University’s values of professionalism, discipline, and compassion throughout their academic journey. She urged them to make the most of every opportunity for learning while developing into responsible healthcare professionals committed to serving society.

The ceremony concluded with an atmosphere of excitement and optimism as the freshers embarked on their academic journey. The event reaffirmed SRMIST’s commitment to providing interdisciplinary education, research-driven learning, and value-based healthcare training, preparing the next generation of skilled, compassionate, and globally competent healthcare professionals.
