Kattankulathur, August 05, 2026: As part of the Hon’ble Chancellor’s Birthday Celebrations, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), under the aegis of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), in association with the Department of Community Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, organised its first Free Medical Camp at Karunilam Village on August 05, 2026.
The camp marked the beginning of a series of eight free medical camps being conducted across SRMIST’s adopted villages during August to promote accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare among rural communities.
The inaugural programme was attended by Mr. Shankar, President, Karunilam Village Panchayat; Mr. Mohan, Panchayat Secretary; Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) and Nodal Officer, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), SRMIST; and Dr. Lakshminarayanan, Assistant Professor, National Service Wing (NWC), School of Computing, SRMIST.
A multidisciplinary team of doctors from SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, led by Dr. Shakthi Chakravarthi, provided comprehensive medical consultations and healthcare services to the villagers. Specialists from General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, and Audiology participated in the camp, ensuring access to a wide range of medical expertise.
The camp provided a range of free healthcare services, including general and specialist consultations, height and weight measurement, blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, basic blood investigations, health screening, health education, eye examinations, and distribution of essential medicines. Patients requiring further evaluation or advanced treatment were counselled and referred to SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre for appropriate follow-up care.
Students of the Tamil Perayan Paari Manavar Narpani Mandram actively volunteered at the camp, supporting beneficiary registration, patient guidance, queue management, documentation, and coordination of various activities. Their involvement contributed to the smooth and efficient conduct of the programme.
The camp received an encouraging response from the local community, with more than 200 villagers benefiting from medical consultations, diagnostic services, health screening, and medicines. The initiative also focused on preventive healthcare, early detection of health conditions, and creating awareness about healthy lifestyle practices.
The Free Medical Camp Series will continue throughout August 2026 across SRMIST’s adopted villages of Pulippakkam, Guruvambedu, Athur, Chettipuniyam, Kolathur, Anjur, and Old Perungalathur. The camps will provide comprehensive healthcare services to local communities, with eligible beneficiaries also receiving commemorative gifts as part of the Hon’ble Chancellor’s Birthday Celebrations.
The initiative reflects SRMIST’s commitment to social responsibility, inclusive healthcare, and community development through Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, strengthening the institution’s efforts to take quality healthcare services closer to underserved rural communities and contribute to their overall health and well-being.
