The Department of Clinical Psychology, SRM School of Allied Health Sciences, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), successfully organised a seminar on “LGBTQ+ in Contemporary India: Progress, Challenges and Road Ahead” on September 3, 2026, at the SRM Hospital Seminar Hall, Kattankulathur.
The seminar brought together diverse perspectives to facilitate a deeper understanding of the experiences, concerns, and evolving challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in contemporary India. The programme featured distinguished speakers representing clinical practice, advocacy, community representation, and lived experience.
The speakers included Dr. Virupaksha H.S., Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, BGS Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru; Ms. Sakshi, representing the transgender community; Ms. Mayura Ganesan, Transgender Rights Advocate and CEO & Founder of Maatrukaari LLP; and Dr. Janani Vasanth, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Amaha Health.
The diversity of perspectives offered participants a comprehensive understanding of LGBTQ+ concerns, highlighting the importance of approaching these issues through clinical, social, community, advocacy, and lived-experience perspectives. The sessions encouraged meaningful dialogue around awareness, acceptance, inclusion, and sensitivity in professional and social settings.
The seminar was conceptualised as an academic and professional learning initiative aimed at enhancing awareness and understanding of LGBTQ+ concerns among students and professionals from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, mental health, and social work. It also provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the evolving social landscape and the role of mental health professionals in fostering inclusive and sensitive practices.
Through meaningful discussions and diverse perspectives, the seminar contributed to creating a more informed and empathetic understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences, reinforcing the importance of inclusive approaches in mental health education and professional practice.
