NATIONAL VIRTUAL CME ON “RECENT UPDATES IN SALIVARY GLAND TUMOURS- CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES” – FEBRUARY 15, 2022.
Organized by the DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY, SRM MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL & RESEARCH CENTRE, Kattankulathur, Chengalpet District, Tamil Nadu.
under the AEGIS of TAMIL NADU & PONDICHERRY CHAPTER OF INDIAN ASSOCIATION OF PATHOLOGISTS & MICROBIOLOGISTS (TNPCIAPM)
The virtual CME on Recent Updates in Salivary Gland tumours had a total over 500 registered participants all over India and few International participants from Oman, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. More than 270 participants opted to apply for the credit points from Tamil Nadu Medical Council.
The overall Scientific Program was for a period of 6 hours and started with a clinical topic, by Prof. Dr. Jagadesh Chandra Bose, oncosurgeon (Prof & Head, Dept of Surgical Oncology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai) on the topic “Pre-op diagnostic dilemma in salivary gland tumours – are the surgeons expectations fulfilled?”. It was an excellent and comprehensive lecture with take home messages on the clinical approach to salivary gland lesions before FNAC or biopsy procedures, protocols for diagnostic modalities including imaging and the need to closely discuss with the surgeon especially on controversial diagnoses. This session was chaired by Dr. V. M. Duraimavalavan, Medical Oncologist, SRM Medical College Hospital, Kattankulathur.
The second session by Prof. Dr. Usha Kini (Professor of Pathology, St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore) on “ FNA of salivary gland lesions- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” was an eye opener on the various diagnostic dilemmas faced by the cytopathologists in practice with respect to salivary gland lesions. Prof. Kini emphasized on the need to be aware of various morphological overlaps in benign and malignant salivary gland lesions and reiterated that a sound knowledge of histopathology is very important for reporting in cytology as one needs to know where each cell originates from. This session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Sandhya Sundaram, Prof & Head, Dept of Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai and President, TNPCIAPM (TamilNadu and Pondicherry chapter of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists).
The next session on “Recent Advances in Salivary gland tumour pathology” followed by an interactive Slide seminar covering an extensive array of these lesions by Prof. Dr. S. Rajendiran (Visiting Professor of Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai) comprehensively covered histopathology, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology and recent clinicopathological staging of salivary gland tumours. Prof. Rajendiran emphasized on the applied histology of the duct system in salivary glands and the corresponding cell of origin of various tumours as well as the broad classification of SOX10 positive and SOX10 negative salivary gland tumours, recent clinicopathological staging systems and targeted therapy options for specific tumours. This session was chaired by Prof. Dr. K. Chandramouleeswari, Prof & Head, Dept of Pathology, Tamil Nadu Government Multispecialty hospital, Chennai and Secretary- TNPCIAPM.
The inauguration of the CME preceded the Scientific program. Dr. Jaison Jacob John, Professor & Head, Dept of Pathology, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre welcomed the gathering. Dr. Sandhya Sundaram, President TNPCIAPM delivered the special address. Prof. Dr. A Sundaram, Dean, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre delivered the inaugural address. Prof. Dr. Lt. Col. A Ravikumar, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Medical & Health Sciences) delivered the Presidential address. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. G. Shivashekar, Professor of Pathology, SRM MCH.
The feedback from participants (faculty and residents) on the CME program was overwhelmingly positive and they felt it was a much-needed update on recent advances in salivary gland tumours with many take-home messages for clinicians and pathologists that can be implemented in routine practice as well as an academic treat for Post-graduates by eminent experts in the field.
The Organizing Committee and the Department of Pathology, SRM Medical College Hospital Kattankulathur is very thankful to all the participants, Speakers, Chairpersons, Senior Professors, colleagues and SRM MCH, SRMIST administration and the management for their contributions and support to make this educational endeavour a grand success.
