The University Wellness Program (UWP), SRM Institute of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH&PM), Chennai, successfully organised a Peer Volunteer Training Workshop on Substance Abuse Prevention at the Medical College, SRMIST, Kattankulathur, on 13th March 2026.

The workshop focused on creating awareness about substance abuse, with a strong emphasis on tobacco use, while equipping students to take on the role of peer volunteers in driving prevention and awareness initiatives within their communities.

We were honoured to have Dr. A. Somasundaram, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Chennai, as the Chief Guest. The sessions were led by distinguished resource persons, including Dr. K. Krishnaraj, Joint Director (NCD) and State Tobacco Control Officer, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Dr. T. Pravin, State NCD DPO, O/o DPH&PM. Their insights shed light on tobacco control policies, emerging nicotine products, and the broader public health challenges associated with substance abuse.

The programme covered key areas such as the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), COTPA, 2003, and the health impacts of tobacco use. An engaging quiz and interactive session encouraged active participation, while the concluding tobacco control pledge reinforced a collective commitment towards building a drug-free society.

The enthusiastic involvement of students from medical and allied health sciences reflected a growing sense of responsibility among youth. The workshop not only strengthened their understanding of national health policies but also inspired them to step forward as peer educators and advocates for community well-being.

A meaningful step towards nurturing informed, responsible, and health-conscious future professionals.
