SRM “Centre for Clinical trials & Research” is a 5000 square feet facility that is housed in the third floor of SRM Medical College Hospital at Kattankulathur, Chengalpattu district. It is a world class clinical trial center, dedicated to provide high quality and timely clinical research services. The research center is a dedicated set up which collaborates with researchers, sponsors, academia, Govt agencies to carry out clinical trials with drugs, vaccines and medical devices. The facility will be inaugurated by Dr.P. Sathyanarayanan, Pro Chancellor Academics, in the presence of Lt.Col. Dr A. Ravikumar, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Medical & Health Science), Dr A. Sundaram, the Dean of SRM Medical College on December 15, 2021.
The facility consists of two separate wards for male and female participants with 12 beds, rooms for obtaining consent including audio-visual consent, sample collection, sample processing, sample storage, data documentation and monitoring, duty physician room, investigational product storage room & sample storage room with 24 X 7 UPS back up and temperature-controlled environment, archival room, board room and investigators rooms. All facilities that are essential to perform clinical trials are housed in the dept such as deep freezers (-80 degrees Celsius and -20 degree Celsius), high speed centrifuge, facilities for electronic data capture with high speed internet, thermohygrometers and data security is maintained with controlled access. This Centre is headed by Dr Satyajit Mohapatra, Professor of Pharmacology and supported by a team of Investigators from Clinical Pharmacology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Nephrology, anesthesia and critical medicine, Dermatology. There are dedicated research staff to handle the research activities of the dept such as clinical research coordinators, data entry operators, research nurses and administrative staff. It must be noted that the above team was also instrumental in successfully conducting the COVAXIN clinical trials (phase 1, 2 and 3) at SRM Hospital. In the last ten years more than 35 sponsored and academic clinical trials have been done in various diseases such as Rota virus infection, acute coronary syndrome, chronic stable angina, COVID-19 infection, bronchial asthma, COPD. Grants have been obtained from various funding agencies such as ICMR, BIRAC, DBT and many pharmaceutical industries to carry out these research activities.
