SRM Institute of science and technology and World Bioethics Day Department of International Chair in Bioethics, WMA Cooperating Centre, is delighted to announce the celebration of EIGHTH WORLD BIOETHICS DAY globally on Thursday, 19th October 2023, as part of their commitment to proliferate the awareness and practice of Bioethical principles documented in the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights 2005.

The theme for this year’s celebration shall be ‘Protecting future generations’. This theme is inspired by the Article 16 of UNESCO UDBHR. Protecting future generations is multidimensional and involves creating an environment which provides physical, mental, psychological, social, and moral health.

One of the most pressing risk facing future generations is the environmental crisis. To protect the planet for future generations, we need to take steps to reduce carbon emissions, protect biodiversity, conserve natural resources, and develop sustainable technologies, Access to quality education is essential for ensuring that future generations have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the mission. This includes not just academic subjects, but also practical skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence.

Ensuring that future generations have access to quality healthcare is crucial for promoting their health and wellbeing, with emphasis on not just physical health, but also mental health. Providing economic security to future generations is essential for promoting their welfare and ensuring that they can live fulfilling lives. This can involve measures like providing access to good jobs, affordable housing, and social safety nets. Our future generations should have equlaccess to opportunities and essential resources for promoting social justice. This includes addressing issues like racism, inequality, and discrimination.
